Welcome to the latest edition of the World of DaaS Roundup.
For years, data was treated like it was free. This week, the bill arrived.
Courts put prices on it. Markets confirmed it. And somewhere in between, Spain won a World Cup by having the most consistent data signature of any team in the tournament.
This week's edition is brought to you by the World of DaaS community. If you're not already a member, join us here.

📰 News & Reads
Pirating books to train AI just got a price tag. Anthropic’s $1.5B settlement sets data training liability at $3,000 per pirated work.
480,000 pirated works, $3,000 each. The largest copyright settlement in U.S. history. Training on legally acquired data is fair use. Training on pirated data is not. For anyone building AI on third-party content, the price of unauthorized data just became very concrete.
How alternative data drives investment insight and alpha potential, according to T. Rowe Price.
Web scrapes, pricing signals, satellite imagery, hiring data. T. Rowe Price's Investment Data Insights team uses all of it to surface opportunities others miss. The edge isn't the data itself. It's the people and processes built around it.
Truth Social just became a data product. Trump Media is charging Wall Street up to $100,000/month for real-time access to Trump’s market moving posts.
The Truth API delivers posts from Truth Social's 10 most influential accounts in milliseconds. Trump Media is also in talks to license the data to AI companies for LLM training. A social media platform just became a data licensing business.
News Corp countersues Brave for “flagrant theft” of WSJ and New York Post data sold to AI companies.
News Corp is seeking up to $150,000 per scraped article. The case joins Anthropic's $1.5B settlement and the Perplexity lawsuits in drawing a clearer line: scraping and reselling data without a license is not fair use. The price of content data keeps going up.

Anthropic's Felix Rieseberg on why AI will win a Nobel Prize before it ever wins a Pulitzer. Summation with Auren Hoffman — July 21, 2026.
→ Felix Rieseberg leads engineering for Claude Cowork and Claude Code Desktop at Anthropic. In this conversation with Auren, he argues that AI's next step isn't just solving problems — it's owning responsibilities. The distinction matters: a system that solves a problem hands the answer back to a human. A system that owns a responsibility operates autonomously on data, decisions, and outcomes. That shift changes everything about how enterprises will build, buy, and govern AI.
In this episode, they discuss:
Why AI will win many Nobel prizes before it wins a single Pulitzer — and what that tells us about where data and reasoning succeed vs. where human judgment still wins.
The difference between solving a problem and owning a responsibility — and why that's the next frontier for enterprise AI built on proprietary data.
How AI is moving into the physical world, from a $30 coffee-machine display to a Wi-Fi garage opener — and what that means for data collection at the edge.
Why "learn from the Navy SEALs" is bad management advice — and what actually works when building high-performance data and engineering teams.
What it takes to ship AI products at Anthropic's speed without sacrificing the data quality and governance that enterprise clients demand.
An Unexpected Data Read For Today.
The 2026 World Cup is over. Spain won. And the numbers tell a story no broadcast could.
48 teams. 104 matches. 308 goals, a record. The ball's embedded sensor transmitted 500 data points per second across every match. 29 body tracking points per player, per frame. And yet the tournament's decisive moment came from a substitute, Ferran Torres off the bench, something no predictive model had flagged as the match-winning variable.
Sky Sports ran a full data analysis of the tournament and found something interesting: Spain wasn't the most extreme team in any single statistical category. Not the fastest. Not the highest xG. Not the most possession. They just had the most consistent data signature across every metric, every game.
In football, as in business, the winner isn't always the team that dominates one number. It's the team whose data looks the same in game 7 as it did in game 1.

Where Data Meets Art
A building in San Francisco is performing its own data as music.
DATASONICA, winner of the 2026 Data Sonification Award, transforms live sensor data from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory's Building 59 into a real-time musical composition. Air temperature plays on a church organ. Humidity shapes a double bass. Solar radiation drives a violin. Dew point defines tonal decay through a glockenspiel.
London-based data artist Tiziana Alocci built a system where the building literally listens to itself and performs what it hears.
For anyone in data industry, it raises an obvious question: what would your data sound like if you stopped visualizing it and started listening to it instead?
